Digital Artists' Books
Course Description
The computer is an innovative tool for reconsidering the nature of the written word and graphic expression. Artists' books are characterized by unusual formats and content: they use the written word and pictorial image to expand upon and rearrange the notion of what a book is. This workshop combines the computer's ability to bring varied information together in virtual space with the book's inherent display in real time and physical space. Through this process the book becomes a wondrous site for the collection, organization, and presentation of information from the unique perspective of the artist. A variety of innovative formats and traditional book-binding techniques will be used in tandem with current publishing and imaging software to produce books that can be simultaneously cerebral and tactile. Examples of contemporary artists' books and other innovative displays of information in book form will be presented.
