Pete Pinnell
The Pouring Vessel
Course Description
The sound and sight of a pouring liquid is entrancing, and potters can make use of that knowledge to produce lively and engaging work. During this week, we will take a look at the art and craft of the pouring vessel, with the emphasis on making spouts that are successful on both a practical and abstract, compositional level. We will discuss, investigate, and produce spouts for teapots, coffeepots, pitchers, and ewers. Demonstrations will involve a variety of fabrication techniques, both on and off the wheel. The members of the workshop will also have a chance to share their own techniques with the hope that we can all leave with a wealth of new ideas.

Artist's Statement
As a ceramic artist, I am equally intrigued with the visual, tactile, and experiential aspects of pottery. In contrast with conventional wisdom in the Art world, I don’t see utility as an impediment to creativity. Rather, I see utility as a gateway to experiential aesthetics, a powerful and underutilized means of aesthetic communication.
