Alumni in Athletics

Athletics at St. Andrew's-Sewanee are an integral part of the total school curriculum. It is one of the means by which students build character, exercise leadership skills and learn the value of discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship. In recent years several SAS alumni have taken these skills and their athletic prowess to the next level -- intercollegiate athletics.

Classroom Stars, Too

Players and teams are recognized not only for their athletic ability, but also their academic achievements. Five swimmers have been named All American Academic winners in recent years. The varsity girls' soccer team received the NSCAA High School Team Academic Award for four straight years. All SAS varsity teams have honor students on their roster.

Sam Smith '17, Swimming, Lewis and Clark

Sam Smith '18

Sam Smith '17 swims for Lewis and Clark College competing in the Breast and Free. As a freshman, he finished in 20th place in the 200 Y Breast at at the Northwest Conference Championships. He is interested in environmental studies, biology, and outdoor recreation.
While a student at SAS, Sam took classes in biology and undertook research at the University of the South. He served as a Proctor and achieved Eagle Scout status in Boy Scouts. He was a 4-year member of the school’s swim and soccer teams, 3-time MVP of the swim team and 2-time soccer MVP and All-District player. Sam competed in the 100 Butterfly, 100 Breaststroke, 200 Medley Relay, and 4x100 Relay at the 2017 state swim championships. He was a recipient of the school's Sewanee Military Academy Memorial Merit Award in honor of his athletic proficiency, academic excellence, and outstanding character.

Abby Mainzer '16, Wrestling, Oklahoma City University

Abby Mainzer '16 wrestles for Oklahoma City University (OCU), a national powerhouse in women's collegiate wrestling.
A three-year MVP in wrestling at SAS, Abby placed first in the 185-pound weight class in the 2014 and 2015 TSSAA State Wrestling Championships and third place at 148-pounds her senior year. In addition to wrestling, Abby was a four-year varsity starter on the basketball team, a former MVP in mountain biking, and a former Most Improved Player in softball. She served SAS as a Student Ambassador, Honor Council member, and Proctor. She was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a first lieutenant in the Tullahoma Cadet Squadron and Cadet Commander.


Tommy Oliver '16, Golf, The University of the South

Tommy Oliver

Tommy Oliver ' 16 was named 2018 Southern Athletic Association Men's Golf Co-Player of the Year and selected to the All-SAA First Team. Tommy finished the SAA Championships with a 223, finishing in a tie for sixth place. As a sophomore he averaged 73.25 strokes per round, and recorded his season-low score of 71 twice.

Tommy was a High Honors student at SAS, a Proctor, and a standout member of the golf, soccer, and wrestling teams. Over his career he was named Most Improved Player in wrestling and golf and Most Valuable Player in wrestling, golf, and cross country, and received the Coaches’ Award in wrestling and soccer. He was recognized as the 2016 Best Male Athlete. His senior year he was TSSAA Division II-A East Middle Region Champion in golf and went on to place 6th in the State tournament.

Jake Wiley '16, Soccer, Hendrix College

Jake Wiley

Jake Wiley '16 has appeared in 19 games for the Hendrix Warriors as a defender and midfielder, has two goals, and contributed to one shutout.

Jake was a four-year, three-sport athlete at SAS and received the Most Valuable Player Award as a junior in wrestling and as a senior in soccer. He received the Coaches’ Award in golf and wrestling as a senior. Jake also served as a Proctor.





Jenna Burris '14, Golf, Middle Tennessee State

Jenna Burris '14 spent much of the spring semester of her senior year at the number one spot in the Division-I MTSU lineup, averaging 73 strokes per round to lead the Blue Raiders. She won her first individual title at the Conference USA Championship, firing a career low 7-under 209 (67-70-72) … Her three-round total of 209 was the second-best in school history. She was named an All-Conference USA Second Team selection. She was also a member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
At SAS, Jenna has received Tennessee Golf Association and All-American Junior Golf Tour honors. She won Player of the Year honors on the 2012 TGA Taylor-Made Adidas Jr. Tour and MVP for the 2013 Tennessee Junior Cup. She played in her first state tournament in 2009 as an 8th grader, tying for 8th place that year. As a junior, she played 4th in the state tournament and finished 3rd her senior year. Burris also played volleyball and basketball at SAS. She was the recipient of the 2014 Best Female Athlete award.

Katie Craighill '13, Rugby, Bowdoin College

Katie Craighill '13 played rugby for the Bowdoin College Polar Bears who were ranked #4 in the nation in 2014. A fullback, Katie began playing the sport as a college freshman.

At SAS, Katie excelled on the soccer field and in the classroom, graduating as valedictorian of her class. She was goalie and team captain for the women's soccer team, a swimmer, and a track athlete. Katie received the Day Student Award, was co-recipient of the Best Female Athlete award, and was a member of Cum Laude, the school's honor society. She served as a Proctor and as the girls' soccer captain and goalkeeper and was named to the All-Region D-II Soccer Team.

Allyson Hale '12, Soccer, Maryville College

Allyson Hale '12 played starting forward on the Maryville College soccer team. She finished her junior year 15 goals, 6 assists, and 36 points ranking her 2nd on the team in all three categories. Her outstanding season saw her selected to the USA South Athletic Conference 1st team, and the USA South All-Conference Tournament team. Allyson was voted by her teammates as the Team Offensive MVP for the 2nd consecutive season. Her sophomore year she earned a spot on the USA South Athletic Conference All-Conference 3rd team, and she was voted by her peers as Team Offensive MVP.
At SAS, Allyson was named the MVP for soccer, basketball and track. She was also named to the Tennessee High School Soccer Coaches Association East/Middle Division II-A All-State Team. Allyson was an honors student, Proctor, and co-recipient of Best Female Athlete of the Year.


Sadie Shackelford '12, Tennis, Middlebury College

Sadie Shackelford '12 played tennis for Middlebury College.
While at SAS, she was an honors student, a member of the Cum Laude Society, and winner of the Danny Griffiths Award for Excellence in English. She was the state tennis champion in Tennessee's Division II-A twice. She also played soccer and basketball while at SAS. She received the coaches' award in basketball for two years and the MVP tennis award for four years. She was an SAS Ambassador and co-recipient of Best Female Athlete of the Year.

Andrew Heitzenrater '15 plays guard for the Sewanee Tigers.
He was a three-sport athlete at SAS and received the Coaches’ Award in basketball and golf.




Michaela Riehl '17, Cross Country, Agnes Scott College

Michaela Riehl

Michaela Riehl '17 runs cross country for the Scotties.
Michaela was an Honors student at SAS and a member of the cross country and track and field teams. She also sang with the SAS Vocal Ensemble.

Casey Willis '16, Baseball, Edgewood College

Casey Willis

Casey Willis '16 is an outfielder for the Edgewood Eagles. He hit .253 in 2018 with six doubles, one triple, one home run, 19 RBIs, and 10 runs scored.
Casey was an honors student and a two-sport athlete at SAS. He received both the Coaches’ and MVP awards in baseball.
