Time-Based Space: Experimentations in Spatial Media Design
Session One - June 12-18, 2016
This workshop, for beginners as well as experienced media practitioners, introduces the Isadora patch-based software to easily create a customized interactive, real-time video and audio interface. Working with the 250 pre-set node set up, artists will learn how to create node “scenes”, connecting patch effects to manipulate and generate unique visual and audio outputs. Applications for the real-time interface will experiment with projection mapping, sensor inputs for direct, generative interaction and performative forms with live camera input channels.
With the ease of the software set up, the workshop will emphasize experimentation on a daily basis with individual as well as collaborative outcomes being presented throughout the week. Within that process the group will discuss ways to create a rich and meaningful dialog surrounding the virtual impact of physical space with the intent of creating new mediated spatial experiences.
Artist's BiographyDanielle Roney’s artistic practice navigates virtual and physical migrations, displacing communicative infrastructures to expose the impact and potentialities of our technological society. Her project, Global Portals, presented networked public spaces at TEDGlobal 2005; with subsequent simulcasts from Johannesburg, South Africa. She has worked and exhibited in Beijing, Johannesburg, Venice, Sao Paulo, Istanbul and US venues and has permanent public art commissions across the US. Her project, Opposing Views was presented by the International Symposium of Electronic Arts Istanbul 2011 with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb. Roney performed with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra 2014 and will present Refugee Conversations at the Zuckerman Museum of Art 2016. Her work has been reviewed in Art in America and ArtPapers and featured in Noplaceness: Art in a Post-Urban Landscape and Dislocations by Leonardo Electronic Almanac. She has received grants including Sony Electronics and the National Endowment of the Arts and awards from the Loridans Foundation. Roney was the designer of the U.S. Pavilion, Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010 with the High Museum of Art. She studied sculpture and digital media at the University of Georgia and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Working with sculpture, time-based media and interactive media architecture, I interweave the duality of isolation and connectedness, redefining the spatial relationship of encounters to transcend geographical, political and ideological barriers. Developed through a research driven process, my projects reflect the theoretical influences of Chantal Mouffe, speaking to issues of pluralism and the role of conflict in democracy, and Vilém Flusser’s perspective on exile, the migrant condition and the impact of technology on a mechanized cultural identity. Engaging liminal spaces where we negotiate our place in the world, intermediality and the immaterial unfold through mechanisms of Magical Realism. Telematics, time-base space and non-linear cinematic constructs reflect simultaneity, where the virtual replaces the magical; hybridity reflects multiple planes of reality; and where a collective consciousness is present and utilized beyond the fictional aspects of spatial narratives, breaking the plane with the viewer and creating a participatory experiential continuum.

Laptops, Windows or Mac, and premade video and audio content is recommended. Optimal media file formats and compressions will be sent to all registrants. For beginners, an archive of media files will be available to share and manipulate. Content can also be made inside and out of the workshop environment during the week with the artist assisting in any technical questions. Basic media file authoring software is recommended. Phones, cameras and microphones are all viable onsite content tools. A set of basic sensors will be provided for additional experimentation. Participants who wish to bring Midi devices can consult the software manual and the artist ahead of the workshop time period. For the workshop, Troikatronix will provide a free, one-month license for our workshop. Once registered, participants will need to provide Danielle with their platform information (Windows or Mac) so she can arrange the full license downloads.
