Explore Visual Storytelling and Mixed-Media Poetry Supply List

These are the basic items to have on hand:

  • An idea for a story! Or a previously written work that you’d like to adapt into a visual story or poem.
  • Pencils for sketching and drafting
  • Pens: I love the Pentel Brush Pen, Uni-ball Black Roller ball, and Micron pens in various sizes 
  • Watercolor paints or ink
  • Bristol board paper or Watercolor paper: 9" x 12" is fine 
  • Paint brushes in a variety of sizes
  • Sketchbook or Mixed-Media Journal for drafts, sketches, and storyboards  

Please feel free to bring any of the following supplies that you think you’d like to work with to create your visual stories. I will have extras of these to share as well:

  • Relevant reference images for illustration or collage (e.g., photos related to the story, location, or time period)
  • Colored pencils
  • Ink and/or acrylic ink
  • Gouache paints
  • Acrylic paints
  • Acrylic paint pens
  • Alcohol markers
  • Drawing paper
  • Tan drawing paper
  • Tracing paper
  • Water cups (to rinse paint brushes)
  • Glue stick (for collage and mixed media)
  • Scissors (for collage and mixed media)
  • Old books, magazines, and other ephemera (for collage and mixed media)
  • A ruler and/or T-square (if you like comics panels with clean edges)

If you choose to create your work digitally, or wish to make your analog art shareable on digital platforms, here are some other tools you might bring along:

  • iPad or Wacom Cintiq
  • Apple pencil or Wacom pen
  • Procreate—a drawing app downloaded onto an iPad ($12.99)
  • Laptop with editing software
