Bringing Out the Best: Visually Telling Our Stories in Collage and Stitch

Join Merill Comeau in exploring methods of translating the written word and ideas into visual communication.

 
Course Description

This workshop provides focused time and support to begin, expand, or deepen the use of autobiography as a source of inspiration for your art practice. Participants will use short writing and collage exercises to inspire self-reflection and to develop facility with formal design. As a group, we will practice methods of translating the written word and ideas into visual communication. Each day will include a demonstration of technique including incorporating text, printing methods, employing abstract representation, and stitching expressively. Throughout the week we will look at and discuss narrative artists’ work, share our own work, and receive positive, constructive feedback. With ample independent studio time, participants will create a unique and meaningful piece based on a personal story. All levels welcome, participants may work in paper or textiles.

Artist Biography

In conjunction with her solo studio practice, Merill Comeau facilitates the emergence of artistic voices. She has executed over 30 public projects in educational, spiritual, and residential settings resulting in individual and collaborative artworks. Teaching highlights include Eliot School of Applied Arts and Craft in Boston, and Outside the Lines in Oregon.  Comeau teaches regularly at Snow Farm New England Center for Craft and joined their Board of Directors in 2022.  In addition to teaching at Surface Design Association’s biennial conference, Comeau is a member of the SDA events committee.  Among her multiple projects for TextileArtist.org, Comeau was an inaugural Workshop Leader for Expressive Stitch Challenge for the Members’ Stitch Club in 2021 and returned providing a new stitch challenge in 2024.  Also in 2021, Comeau taught at the Center for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, Fuller Craft Museum, and Boston’s Photographic Resource Center.

Merill Comeau’s work has been featured in over 90 exhibitions, at venues including the Fuller Craft Museum, Danforth Art Museum, Attleboro Art Museum, Museums of Old York, Maine, the Center for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, PA.
