Experimental Video for Storytelling
Craft experimental videos as a method for artistic storytelling with Laleh Mehran.
Course Description
Visual storytelling has transcended time and cultures for over a century, providing a connection to our past, present, and even future. In this workshop, participants will craft experimental videos using a blend of digital and practical effects, bringing an altered perspective to visual elements. They will develop the skills to create a new visual language or enhance their existing one, infusing it with symbols and metaphors to bring their visuals to life and craft distinctive artistic expressions for storytelling. Additionally, audio is explored through recordings from our surroundings combined and blended with sampled sounds, crafting experimental audio which will enhance the videos. Throughout the workshop, participants will be guided on using these experimental visuals and techniques to tell complex and captivating stories. Video and audio basics will be covered.

Artist Biography
Laleh Mehran was born in Iran and relocated with her family to the United States at the start of the Iranian Islamic Revolution. She creates elaborate environments in digital and physical spaces focused on complex intersections between politics, religion, and science. In a political climate in which certain views are increasingly suspect and can have extreme consequences, Mehran’s artworks are invitations to think again about each of these paradigms and the profound connections that bind them.
Her work has been shown individually and collaboratively across the USA and international venues including the ISEA (United Arab Emirates), National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (Taiwan), FILE (Brazil), ACT Festival (South Korea), 404 International Festival of Art & Technology (Argentina), European Media Arts Festival (Germany), MASS MoCA (Massachusetts), Mattress Factory Museum (Pennsylvania), Vanderbilt University (Tennessee), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pennsylvania), The Andy Warhol Museum (Pennsylvania), Denver Art Museum (Colorado), and MCA Denver (Colorado). She has received awards including the Creative Capital Foundation Grant (subRosa collective), Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, West Virginia Commission on the Arts, and the Cultural Program for Enhancing Mutual Understanding from the American Embassy in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Mehran is a Professor of Emergent Digital Practices at the University of Denver.
