Painting: Land, Sky, & Earth Entity

SESSION III: JUNE 15-21
PAINTING
WITH MARY VAUGHAN

Explore the process of painting with Mary Vaughan through landscape studies, abstraction methods, art history, and other unexpected channels.

Course Description

Participants will explore the notion of ‘painting” in the larger scope of the word, as well as its role within our lives. We will work from direct outdoor observation, from intuition, and from your photographs of the pre-class “gathering assignments." Be ready to create landform or landscape studies, explore abstraction methods, dive into a bit of art history, focus on a few details and navigate unexpected channels to work through painting concepts. You will be painting several ways within daily assignments.

Whether an established painter or a beginner, the intention of the workshop is to activate you within the process of painting, by finding meaning and moments of technical encouragement in paint. Be prepared to draw as we move into painting and know that imperfect drawing can lead to unexpected painting wonders. Also know that you will be working on more than one painting at a time, coming away with a good cluster of painted studies by “show and tell” time.

Artist Biography

Mary Vaughan is an abstract, yet narrative painter whose work exudes a strong painterly quality and a fascination with nature, land forms and earth entities. Vaughan strives to evoke meaning beyond the obvious with visual metaphor.

Vaughan holds an MA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the Maine College of Art in Portland. She has worked as a full-time painter in Santa Rosa, California since 2001. Raised in Nebraska by a father whose love for old fonts and color as a commercial printer and a mother whose literary interests ignited intellectual thinking, Vaughan continues to nurture her ties to the Midwest and lives part of each year in Santa Rosa and Hastings, Nebraska where she was born and raised.

Vaughan has exhibited widely, including a solo show – “Wings Over the Platte” – at the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, NE. Her work has also been viewed at the Governor’s Exhibit through the Nebraska State Arts Council – Omaha, NE, and Art Trails of Sonoma County – Santa Rosa, CA
