The Long Journey: Building a Sustainable Art Practice
SESSION II: JUNE 8-14
WORD + IMAGE
with Elsa Muñoz & José Olivarez
Hone your discipline and purpose as an artist in this multidisciplinary Word + Image workshop with author José Olivarez and painter Elsa Muñoz.
Course Description
This multidisciplinary workshop invites participants to hone their discipline and purpose as artists. What is our perspective as artists? How do we stand out in a world where AI mocks our practice and the internet feels simultaneously like it can help us grow or drown us?
In our writing and painting, we will use a variety of techniques to develop our image-making practice, including ekphrasis, metaphor, and translation. On the visual side, we will focus on locating the content that feels most alive to us—those images and ideas that spark genuine excitement and curiosity. Through an exploration of content, form, and mood, we’ll work toward honing our artistic voice and creating work rooted in authenticity. By tuning into what compels us to create, we’ll learn to trust our instincts and develop imagery that feels uniquely ours. Ultimately, the goal of this workshop is to leave you with practices that can sustain you through those gnawing periods of self-doubt. We hope this class will lead you toward revelation, wonder, and a keen sense of purpose. No prior knowledge is required. We only require curiosity.

Artist Biographies
Elsa Muñoz is a Mexican-American artist born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Muñoz credits her interest in both nature and healing to her experience growing up in an underserved and often unsafe community with little access to green spaces. Having to spend most of her childhood indoors led to the cultivation of a rich inner world in which she was able to find beauty and sanctuary. Her work explores the threads connecting ecology, personal health and spirituality.
Elsa received her BFA in oil painting from the American Academy of Art in 2006. She has
had 11 solo shows including one at the National Museum of Mexican Art and at the Union League Club of Chicago. Notable collections include DePaul Art Museum (Chicago), the National Museum of
Mexican Art (Chicago), and the private collection of Martin Castro, Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights under President Barack Obama. She was awarded a 2022 SPARK Grant from the Chicago Artists Coalition and was the recipient of the Helen and Tim Meier Foundation For The Arts Achievement Award.
