Unlock the Child Within: Picture Book Writing and Printmaking Workshop

Connect to your inner child and your inner storytelling self in this workshop that combines creative writing with printmaking. Christina will introduce you to the essentials of writing picture books, including story structure, theme, and writing visually. She will lead you through exercises to generate new ideas and strengthen your writing. Laurel will help you move from inspiration to illustration by teaching traditional linoleum carving techniques, transfer technique, and printing processes to create art that connects to your written work. You will gather inspiration from guided walks through the natural beauty of the St. Andrews-Sewanee campus and surrounding trails. By week’s end, you will have created your own printing block/s and associated prints and at least one picture book manuscript that will receive a professional critique from Christina. An optional lecture on “Publishing 101” will answer questions about the path to publication.

About The Artist

Christina Soontornvat is a New York Times bestselling author of books for children of all ages. Her picture books include The Ramble Shamble Children, illustrated by Caldecott Honoree Lauren Castillo, and To Change a Planet, illustrated by Rahele Jomepour Belle. She is the author of the beloved Diary of an Ice Princess chapter book series and the bestselling graphic novel, The Tryout. Christina has received three Newbery Honor awards for her books for middle grade readers, and she is the only author to be awarded Newbery Honors for both fiction and nonfiction in the same year. Laurel York is a highly regarded artist and traditional craftswoman based in Tennessee. She specializes in Appalachian heritage crafts, regularly teaching and exhibiting works in block printing, weaving, felted wool (processed from her own Navajo-Churro sheep), and kudzu basketry.
