St. Mary's Sewanee Campus
Shakerag Workshops is pleased to extend its calendar by offering spring and fall classes at St. Mary's Sewanee, a historic retreat center founded in 1878. St. Mary’s offers natural beauty, simple hospitality, and a serene space for fostering creativity.
The St. Mary’s campus is adjacent to the convent of the Sisters of St. Mary, an Episcopal Order remembered as saints for their heroic ministry during the Memphis yellow fever epidemic. The retreat center was formerly the order’s school for mountain children and a boarding school for girls.
Work: Studios
St. Mary’s Sewanee has two studios with plenty of natural light and a beautiful bluff view that you will find inspiring.
Refuel: The Dining Room
Dining at St. Mary’s includes all of the delicious and nutritious meals that Shakerag participants have come to expect. Our dining staff will provide you with three meals a day. Meals are fresh and nutritious and supplemented with locally baked breads, locally sourced produce, and our famous cookies. With advanced notice, our staff is happy to accommodate food allergies and special dietary needs.
Play: Outdoors
We’ll be keeping you pretty busy, but during your downtime feel free to wander around the grounds or enjoy the contemplative labyrinth. You might consider adding a few days onto either end of your stay to enjoy the many hiking trails in and around Sewanee.
Rest: Anna House
You will be enjoying Anna House, the newest dormitory accommodations at St. Mary’s Sewanee. Each of Anna House’s 20 bedrooms offer a bluff view, two twin beds, personal heating and cooling controls, and a private bathroom. Bedding and towels are provided. Anna House is adjacent to the smaller studio and a short walk from the dining hall and largest studio.
