The Legend of Shakerag Hollow
St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School, Shakerag Workshops’ primary home, is separated from the domain of the University of the South by Shakerag Hollow. The hollow boasts one of the finest wildflower trails in the area. Legend has it that during Prohibition residents of Sewanee could procure liquor by waving a rag to a moonshiner who lived down in the valley. “Shaking the rag” would initiate a transaction in which the customer would leave money on a tree stump below Beckwith Point, near what is now the fourth hole of the Sewanee golf course. When customers returned they would find their cash replaced by a jar of moonshine.
