In this class Rüdiger Schlömer, graphic designer and author of "Typographic Knitting", introduces you to KNIT HELLO, a knit-able typeface he developed especially for beginners. 

If you have ever tried to incorporate letters into your knitting pattern, you might have picked one of the standard typefaces: Arial, Times New Roman or Courier. And you might have experienced that not every letter is easily knitable. KNIT HELLO is a typeface made for hand knitting. Developed straight out of the physical knitting structure, it offers a simple, frustration-free process without floats and getting entangled. You can both sketch it by hand or type it on your computer. In the workshop we will explore the typeface on graph paper and knit a first HELLO. You will learn the basic principles of sketching, which you can later apply to your own words, name tag, or other knitting projects.

Preparation
As preparation, ask yourself: What are my 3 favourite words that I would like to knit? Please bring them along printed out or written on paper.

It’s not often that a single tool changes my knitting life completely, but that is what stitch saver has done for me. Soon, it will change yours too!

Embark with Laura (and her alter ego Lola) on a 3-hour deep dive into the world of stitch saver. To start, Laura will teach a few obvious skills to get us comfortable. Then we’ll move on to the more obscure, and finally end with some absolutely game changing techniques. We’ll be covering provisional cast-ons, an alternative to picking up stitches, creating layers of fabric, a trick for entrelac, heel flaps, top down and bottom up folded hems and more…

Materials List:
• Sport or DK weight yarn- approx. 40- 50 yards; choose a yarn in a light or bright color that is comfortable for you to knit with
• US Size 4 or 5 needles (double pointed AND 24” inch circular)
• If you have a top-down sock ready to work the heel flap bring it along... if not, we’ll have a sock on hand to demo with.
• Laura will supply a stitch saver in class.

What’s made of stitches and walks on four legs? Your next knitting project! In this class we’ll use small-circumference circular knitting to make a simple bean-shaped quadruped that can be turned into all kinds of animals, from cats to elephants, with just a few embellishments. This introduction to tiny toy knitting basics—including working with closed shapes, unconventional I-cords, basic colorwork, and simple embroidery—will open up a menagerie of possibilities to you.

Materials List:
• Fingering, DK, or worsted weight yarn in 2-3 colors (12 yards of main color).
• Set of double-pointed needles sized for a tight gauge for your yarn (I recommend size 1 US (2.25mm) DPNs for fingering-weight yarn or size 5 US (3.75mm) for worsted-weight yarn; DPNs 6” or less in length are recommended.)
