Hands-on Soda Fire and Porcelain Workshop

Learn to make and alter pots on the wheel using soda fire and porcelain techniques focusing on function, technique, comfort, aesthetics, and self-expression. You will also create elements of line and gesture on the surface in a myriad of ways including the use of thick slip. Throwing demonstrations will concentrate on exploring the gestural qualities of porcelain through functional pottery. We will cover many areas of pot making, including functional and aesthetic choices that lead to a better understanding of material, and the generation of new ideas and processes. Through lecture, demonstration, and practice you will learn to glaze, load and fire in the soda kiln. There will be one soda firing, which means that you will have many pots that do not get soda fired. These pieces will be bisque fired for you to take home. This course is for intermediate students who have some experience with clay and are able to throw pots.
